SCORING AND FOLDING

Your task for this project will be to design and construct a container using the traditional silversmithing techniques of scoring and folding. The beauty of scoring and folding as a fabrication process (commonly used in box making) is that crisp angles and edges can be achieved through careful preparation of the sheet metal before bending and soldering. With this in mind, you are to design and construct a container or box. Your chosen piece may be made with a particular function in mind, possibly designed specifically to protect an object or encase something precious or be built precisely with a purely sculptural and decorative approach. I like things I create to be visually pleasing, technically intricating and practical at the same time. Usually, I choose rather a small scale but here I went relatively big, still having in mind all my important points and the relation to the body ornamentation. The choice was quite easy: I'm making a jewellery box. I designed it in a very simple shape, I wanted to etch nature inspired patterns on the outside walls so I felt the decorations would look better if the form is not over complicated. The pictures were made by me during my trips in the Tatra Mountains in Poland, then edited and transferred to copper. Felt laid inside is not glued but sits safely; it can be changed to adjust to personal colour preferences.
